A move from Germany to Portugal is one of the longest routes we run: the distance is one and a half to two times greater than between neighbouring EU countries, and that shows directly in the price. As a starting point: groupage for a 2-3 room flat runs roughly €2,200-3,800, and a dedicated truck for a full house runs roughly €5,000-8,000. The exact figure depends on volume, the specific route and extra services, but the range sits noticeably higher than on short corridors such as Austria to Italy, simply because of the distance and the number of transit countries.

What determines the price of a Germany-Portugal move

The same four factors apply on long-haul routes, but each one behaves a little differently than on a short corridor.

Volume in cubic metres

A carrier prices by the volume your belongings take up in the truck (m³), not the number of boxes. On a long route this variable matters even more, because every extra cubic metre is multiplied by far more kilometres of driving.

Groupage (LTL) or a dedicated vehicle (FTL)

Groupage splits the cost of the run across several clients, and on a route this long the saving is especially noticeable — up to 45%. The trade-off: groupage departures on the Germany-Portugal corridor run less often than, say, between Germany and Poland, so the consolidation and delivery window is wider — your belongings may wait longer for a shared load than on busier corridors. A dedicated vehicle costs more but gives you a fixed date and one truck door-to-door with no transfer at a transit hub, and the longer the route, the more that predictability is worth.

Access at pickup and delivery

A walk-up floor with no lift, a narrow street in central Lisbon or Porto, or having to carry furniture across a courtyard — each of these adds crew time, and time is what drives the price up.

Extra services

Professional packing for fragile or valuable items, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and temporary storage when move-out and move-in dates don't align are especially worth it on a long route — repacking halfway costs more than proper packing from the start.

Route geography: why Germany-Portugal is one of the longest corridors we run

Unlike neighbouring countries sharing a border, a move from Germany to Portugal transits through France and Spain — typically eastern France, then northern or central Spain, entering Portugal most often via the Vilar Formoso/Fuentes de Oñoro crossing (for Lisbon and the centre of the country) or via Badajoz-Elvas (for southern routes and the Algarve).

Real road distances: Berlin-Lisbon is about 2,300 km, Frankfurt-Lisbon about 2,300 km, Munich-Lisbon about 2,400 km, and Hamburg-Porto about 2,300 km. Compared with a move between adjacent countries, that's two-and-a-half to three times further. The practical effect: groupage runs less often on this corridor, and the LTL delivery window is wider than on short routes — plan well ahead rather than booking a week before your preferred date.

Arrival formalities in Portugal

A move between Germany and Portugal is an EU-to-EU move, so there's no customs clearance for your household goods. There is, however, an administrative side worth sorting out in advance.

An EU citizen can stay in Portugal for up to three months without any residence document — the European Commission's "Your Europe" portal is explicit that you cannot be required to apply for one during that period. After three months, the authorities may require registration — in Portugal, that means applying at the local Câmara Municipal or at SEF/AIMA for a "Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia." The same source specifies that the certificate should be issued immediately and cannot cost more than what nationals pay for an identity card (European Commission, Your Europe — Registering residence).

If a vehicle is travelling with the move, a separate rule applies: for vehicle registration purposes, the EU treats your normal residence as the country where you spend more than 185 days in a calendar year (European Commission, Your Europe — Vehicle registration abroad). Portugal's own process is specific: once the vehicle enters the country, the customs vehicle declaration (DAV) must be filed within 20 working days, and the car can still be driven for 60 days on the DAV alone — the licence-plate application through the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) needs to be filed within that same 60-day window (gov.pt — Requesting a licence plate for a vehicle). If the car is travelling separately from the rest of your belongings, our guide to shipping a car or motorbike abroad covers the transport options in detail.

Next step

The Germany-Portugal corridor is one of the longest we run, which is exactly why it's worth planning ahead rather than at the last minute: fewer groupage departures, more transit countries, and more paperwork to prepare for on arrival. We've been organising these moves for more than 5 years, completed over 1,500 residential relocations and 10,000 commercial shipments, and operate our own fleet from 1 to 24 tonnes from offices in France and Poland, with coverage across all 27 EU countries. We work under ISO 9001 certification with CMR liability on every shipment, and payment is flexible: a 10% deposit to book, with the balance due before unloading.

If you want to understand what drives moving costs across Europe more broadly, we have a separate breakdown of what determines the price of an international move, and before you sign with any carrier it's worth checking our guide on how to choose an international moving company. A ready-made door-to-door solution for this exact route is available on our Germany-Portugal door-to-door moving page.
