Moving from France to Austria involves no customs clearance for your belongings, since both are EU members. Residence registration, the car and any pet each run on their own clock, and each is worth planning for ahead of time.
What you don't need: customs
Personal belongings cross the border freely, with no declaration and no inventory to file anywhere. Everything below concerns the paperwork that follows you, not your furniture.
Registering your residence in Austria
For the first three months you cannot be required to hold a residence document. After that, registration can become mandatory. Per the European Commission's Your Europe portal, the certificate must be issued immediately and cannot cost more than an identity card for a national of the country. You can be fined for not registering, but not expelled for that alone.
Your car
If the move is permanent and your car comes with you, it needs registering in Austria. The official EU guidance defines normal residence as more than 185 days a year in the country. We compare driving it yourself, a car-carrier, or shipping it inside the removal truck in our guide to vehicle transport for an international move.
The pet: start eight weeks out
Dogs, cats and ferrets travelling between EU countries need a European pet passport. Per the EU rules on the Your Europe portal, the animal must be microchipped before its rabies vaccination; a vaccination given earlier doesn't count. The minimum age for a first vaccination is 12 weeks, followed by at least 21 days before travel. The European pet passport is valid across the whole EU, and with it you can bring up to five pets per traveller.
The timeline that actually works
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 6-8 weeks before | Check the pet's microchip and vaccination status; book the vet. Request moving quotes. |
| 4 weeks before | Confirm volume and dates with the carrier. Decide how the car travels. |
| 2 weeks before | Pet passport issued. Gather documents for registration in Austria. |
| Moving week | Loading in France, transit, delivery in Austria. |
| First 3 months | Register residence. Start the car re-registration with margin. |
The move itself: groupage or a dedicated truck
Paris or Lyon to Vienna runs 950 to 1,250 km, and the format you choose changes both price and schedule. Groupage shares the truck and costs less but delivers within a window; a dedicated truck costs more but runs direct with a fixed date. The variables behind the price are the same on any European route — we cover them in what determines the price of an international move. The full door-to-door process for this corridor is on our France-Austria international move page.
Where to start
The single most useful thing to do this week, if a pet is travelling with you, is call the vet and check the microchip and vaccination dates — the one deadline on this list that can't be compressed. Everything else can be arranged in parallel. Layner Group runs the France-Austria route with its own fleet from 1 to 24 tonnes out of its office in France, ISO 9001 certified with CMR liability. Send us your volume and both addresses and a preliminary quote comes back within 15-30 minutes.
