Vienna to Munich is one of the shortest international routes in Western Europe, but short distance doesn't automatically mean a low price. On a dense route, the price is still set by the same handful of variables as a long-haul move: volume, transport format, access at both addresses, and your date. Here's how they play out on this specific corridor.

Why distance matters less than it seems

Vienna-Munich runs roughly 430-450 km; Vienna-Berlin around 680 km; Vienna to Hamburg in the north, closer to 800 km. For comparison, the price gap between Vienna-Munich and Vienna-Hamburg is usually smaller than the roughly 350 km difference suggests: on a busy corridor with steady traffic both ways, the carrier more often finds a return load and doesn't drive the truck back empty. Austria-Germany is exactly that kind of corridor.

Volume for planning

Groupage or a dedicated vehicle

On a short route, the price gap between groupage and a dedicated vehicle is narrower than on long-haul lanes: with a smaller volume, groupage still saves up to 45%, but a dedicated vehicle on a short leg like Vienna-Munich costs relatively less than the same choice would on a longer route, because the truck can often run a second job the same day or the next. If a fixed date matters more than the lowest price, a dedicated vehicle is worth considering more readily on short routes than on long ones. We cover the general LTL/FTL logic in how much it costs to ship freight across Europe.

How long it takes

A dedicated vehicle reaches Munich in a single day; Berlin or Hamburg in 1-2 days once mandatory driver rest is factored in. Groupage typically lands within a 3-7 day window. Both stretch out around month-end and in summer, when fewer trucks of the right size are free on this lane.

Costs after the move

Registering your residence

For the first three months, Germany cannot require a residence document from you. After three months, registration can become mandatory. Per the European Commission's Your Europe portal, the certificate must be issued immediately and cannot cost more than a German national ID card.

Your car

A permanent move means registering the car in Germany and paying local taxes. The official EU guidance defines normal residence as more than 185 days a year in the country; there's no single EU deadline table, so confirm the local one.

Double rent

One month of overlap between the lease you're leaving and the deposit on your new German home is one of the largest single costs of the move, and almost nobody budgets for it in advance.

How to compare quotes

On a short route it particularly matters whether furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, and what liability applies to your cargo — covered in international moving insurance. The full week-by-week checklist is in how to organize an international move.

Next step

Layner Group runs the Austria-Germany corridor with its own fleet from 1 to 24 tonnes, out of offices in France and Poland: over 1,500 completed moves, ISO 9001 certification, CMR liability on every trip. The full door-to-door process is on our Austria-Germany international removals page. Send us your volume and both addresses and a preliminary quote comes back within 15-30 minutes.
