Timeline and what drives the price

This is a long-haul route, so book the vehicle with lead time — the earlier the date is confirmed, the wider your choice and the lower the risk of a rush surcharge. Price is driven by volume, transport type (groupage or dedicated vehicle), loading/unloading complexity (floor, lift access, parking) and any extras like packing or temporary storage. On a distance like this, groupage naturally comes with a wider delivery window than on short intra-European routes — worth factoring into your move-in date.

Paperwork: just residence registration

Since both countries are EU members, household goods move without customs clearance, EORI or import declarations. The formality you'll actually deal with on the ground is registering residence in Portugal after the first three months (a visit to the Câmara Municipal or SEF/AIMA), possibly re-registering the car if you're keeping it there long-term, and a pet vaccination timeline that starts several weeks before departure. How the move works, step by step

2. Date confirmed. A 10% deposit locks in the date and the transport format — groupage or dedicated vehicle.
3. Loading in the Netherlands. The crew inventories and loads your belongings, disassembling large furniture where needed.
4. Transport via France and Spain. Roughly 1,870 km to Lisbon or 1,750 km to Porto — you can check status at any point along the way.
5. Unloading and reassembly in Portugal. Items are carried in and furniture reassembled on site, with the balance paid before unloading.
